By Nduka Chiejina

THE Pan Igbo cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, has explained why Igbo are predominantly traders.

Addressing reporters in Abuja yesterday, President of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, Abuja chapter, Nwabueze Obi said they are mainly traders because they are not fully absorbed into the civil service and main stream public service life in Nigeria.

He appealed to the government and those in authority to stop the intimidation of Igbo traders, saying they have a… Continue

Uduaghan and the vermins

By Chioma Ugbechie Tuesday, September 27, 2011

British politician, John Bright, now late, once wrote of Abraham Lincoln in the Cincinnati Gazette: “He was like a waiter in a large eating house where all the bells are ringing at once; he cannot serve them all at once and so some grumblers are to be expected”. Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States .

His ascendancy to the Presidency provoked a civil war era and it took his tact, emotional intelligence and… Continue

How best to transform Nigeria

By Orji Kalu [Okalu@orjikalu.com] Saturday, September 24, 2011

Various analysts, commentators and experts on national issues have, over the years, proffered diverse solutions on how best to transform Nigeria from its retrogressive position into a rich and prosperous nation. Some of these suggestions, as beautiful as they appeared on paper, are not implementable, either now or in the foreseeable future. As is common in our land, some of the suggestions lacked depth and functionality.… Continue

After the noise, let’s talk Salami

By Ikenna Emewu Saturday, September 03, 2011

I can’t remember the last time before the past two weeks I felt so bad and dejected about the attitude of some Nigerians towards sanitizing the nation. For about two weeks, some clan of Nigerians who we would have taken as serious minded and a glimmer of hope that would later illuminate the dark horizons of this clime banded and decided to act like brigands.

I was really appalled that many who claim to know the law, who also should… Continue

The facebook president

Talk is cheap, so they say. The transformation of national agenda from reality to a more complicated avenue of implementation has resulted in a growing concern among many intellectuals who have discovered that society is now tied to two worlds: the world of reality and the Internet social world. It’s either one is living in the world of ‘To go,’ yahoo, google, facebook blogs and twitter or living… Continue

Libya on fire, Nigeria on the precipice

By Orji Kalu [Okalu@orjikalu.com] Saturday, September 03, 2011

Different countries of the world have had one sad story or another to tell since the beginning of 2011. The United States has been at siege in the hands of Hurricane Irene in the past two weeks. Already, 21 persons had been killed by the hurricane in the east coast of the US since it landed in North Carolina. Baghdad and Kabul have had fatalities arising from recent suicide attacks. But for Nigeria and Libya last week was… Continue

OBJ and IBB: Spot the difference!

By AKIN ALOFETEKUN Saturday, September 03, 2011

I had wanted to use “Generals Also Cry” as the title of this article before I remembered that I once nursed the ambition to be a soldier. I liked the power and authority they command. It wasn’t like I had so much of a choice anyway. I grew up watching them prancing all over the place, like they owned the entire universe. As a pupil, I wrote essays on military administrators and heads of state. Boys and girls of my era were raised to see… Continue
