Katsina: Overpaid workers urged to make refunds or face sanction

Written by Segun Olaniyan, Katsina Thursday, 16 February 2012

Despite the hic-cups being experienced over the implementation of the new minimum wage, the Katsina State government, in collaboration with the state Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has urged workers that were over-paid to report such mistakes or face the consequences.

Addressing a joint press conference in Katsina, on Wednesday, the government enjoined staff that received their salaries in excess of the expected take-home-pay to immediately report the overpayment to avert being fished out and punished.

Speaking on behalf of the government, the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Diplomacy and Societal Relations, Alhaji Sada Rumah, said while the government was committed to the agreement reached between it and the labour on the new wage, it would also not want some unscrupulous elements to subvert its efforts.

Rumah, who noted that the former system of manual payment, was associated with fraud, said initial problems currently being faced as a result of the verification exercise would soon be a thing of the past.

He, however, appealed to workers that were yet to receive their salaries to be patient, as efforts were being made to rectify identified loopholes, which resulted in the delay.
