Unrequited love: Ghanian in Police net for alleged murder of Nigerian lover

By Evelyn Usman

FOUR years ago, Miss Chika Obasi like very other young girl, left the cuddling of her parents in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital for Lagos in search of greener pastures. The Ohazara local government area, Ebonyi State born pretty lady was full of expectations as she made to settle down in Lagos.

Soon, she got hooked up with a Ghanaian, an eligible bachelor known as Patrick Pascal, and one year into the amorous affairs, both became head over heels in love. Not wanting to take chances, the then 22 year-old Miss Obasi quickly moved into Pascal’s Onifade Aiyetoro apartment in the neighbouring Ogun State and they started living as ‘husband and wife’ .

Reports say things went on well with the duo until quite recently; and today the relationship has even turned sour as Miss Obasi, the hitherto cynosure of Pascal’s eyes has been turned into a punching bag. A day without Pascal beating Chika is said to be incomplete, as the former lovebirds now live like cats and dogs. Unfortunately, during one of the quarrels last Wednesday, Pascal allegedly beat Chika to a pulp and threw her out of the house.

Missing Chika

But as you read this piece, an agonizing twist has been introduced into the whole unholy drama as Chika’s whereabouts is unknown . Meanwhile, back at her parents Port Harcourt home, apprehension has set in ,following a strange call informing them that their daughter’s corpse was found somewhere in Lagos, last Thursday, necessitating her father to rush down to Lagos. But searches conducted round hospitals and mortuary so far have been futile.

Narrating the family’s predicament, Chika’s father, Eze Cletus Obasi who was visibly distraught called on the Police and other concerned authorities to wade into the matter with a view to finding his daughter’s body.

As if the family had a premonition of what has befallen Chika, Eze Cletus, who is Eze Igbo in Port Harcourt, disclosed that when the daughter visited last year, she was prevented from returning back to Lagos, apparently due to the fact that the marriage with the Ghanaian was done against their consent. But like one blinded by love, Chika, reportedly sneaked back to Lagos.

Explaining what could have resulted in the fight, Eze Cletus said, “ My daughter called to say that her husband drove her away from the house three weeks ago and she went to stay with a friend. She later called last week that she got to her husband’s house, only to find another woman he claimed was his new wife . When she confronted them, she said her husband, the strange woman and another lady started beating her and at the end she was thrown out.

But to my shock, next day being Thursday, my telephone rang and the number happened to be my daughter’s. But when I picked the call, it was another person who introduced himself as Aloe. He asked if I knew the owner of the phone and when I told him it was my daughter’s, he informed us that they had a terrible situation, as my daughter was lying dead in a street I can not remember.

I begged him to rush her to the hospital or even to the morgue. I also advised him to go and report at the police station around , promising to send my relatives to the place. The caller promised to call back. But since then, I have not heard from him. Even when I tried the line, the phone was switched off. I have gone round mortuaries in Lagos and even hospitals and police stations in search of my daughter; but all is to no avail.”

Continuing, Eze Cletus said, “The question begging for an answer is the whereabouts of my daughter. If she is alive , then how come we have not been able to reach her. And if she is dead, then where is her corpse? As if that is not enough, my daughter has a child for her so-called husband. But she called to inform me one day that he took the baby to Ghana and never returned with her. Now I have to grieve over my daughter and granddaughter”, he stated.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police command has arrested the Ghanaian and two other persons alleged to have gang -beaten the estrange wife. The case as gathered, was reported by Eze Obasi at Itele- Otta police division, thereby leading to their arrest.

Spokesman for the Ogun State Mr Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrest, saying that the corpse was yet to be found.
But he could not state categorically if it was a case of murder, saying, “ We have been searching for the body since, to no avail.
